Duct tape

Duct tape has been a household name for many decades and was originally developed in 1942 as a waterproof sealing tape for ammunition boxes. Permacel, a division of Johnson & Johnson, used a rubber-based adhesive for waterproofing, while the surface was made from a highly tear-resistant fabric. In the US military, duct tape has been referred to as "100 mph tape," and today’s high-quality versions of the tape are used for quick repairs during NASCAR races. The name originally came from its use as a tape for sealing leaks in ducts for heating and air conditioning systems. Paradoxically, it turned out that the tape was poorly suited for this purpose, and it is, for example, illegal by law in the state of California to use the tape for this purpose. Source: Wikipedia.
