What is a Ridgeway Rockbag?

The Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbag is a high-strength mesh container filled with rock and designed to function as a filter layer in marine environments. Manufactured from 100% recycled PET (rPET), the product incorporates Japanese technology and is used in civil engineering applications for scour and erosion protection.

The rockbag system was first used in the offshore wind sector in 2013 on the Teesside Offshore Wind Project for monopile scour protection. Since then, it has been applied to a range of subsea asset protection projects, including the protection of exposed cable protection systems (CPS) at the bases of offshore structures.

The flexible design of the Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbag allows it to conform to varying seabed conditions and complex offshore environments. The system is designed to withstand environmental loading while supporting natural seabed integration and the establishment of marine habitats.

Each rockbag incorporates a single-point lifting ring and can be filled using dedicated installation frames. These features are intended to facilitate efficient handling and installation when compared with some traditional subsea protection methods.
